Arokodare Scores on Ajax Debut in Pre-Season Victory Over FC Volendam
Tolu Arokodare marked his Ajax debut with a goal as Dutch giants defeated FC Volendam 3-1 convincingly.
Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare enjoyed a dream start to his Ajax career by scoring on his debut as the Dutch giants defeated FC Volendam 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at the Kras Stadion on Sunday.
The Super Eagles forward made an immediate impact after being introduced in the 71st minute, replacing Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo during the closing stages of the encounter.
Arokodare capped an impressive cameo by scoring Ajax’s third goal after capitalising on a defensive mistake inside the FC Volendam penalty area.
The 24-year-old reacted quickest to a miscued clearance from the home side’s defence before calmly finishing to seal victory for the Amsterdam club.
Ajax had already established control of the match before Arokodare’s introduction.
Defender Anton Gaaei opened the scoring to give the visitors an early advantage, while Leonardo doubled the lead before making way for the Nigerian striker in the second half.
Although FC Volendam managed to pull one goal back, Arokodare’s late strike ensured Ajax wrapped up a comfortable 3-1 victory.
The goal provided an encouraging start for the forward, who recently joined Ajax from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan agreement.
The deal also includes an option for the Dutch club to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign.
Arokodare arrived in Amsterdam after previous spells in Belgium and England, having impressed during his time with Racing Genk before completing his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ajax are expected to rely on the Nigerian’s physical presence, aerial ability and finishing quality as they prepare for the new Eredivisie season and their European commitments.
Scoring on his first appearance is likely to boost his confidence as he competes for a regular place in the team.
The pre-season fixture also gave Ajax head coach another opportunity to assess his squad ahead of the start of the competitive campaign, with several new signings and young players featuring during the encounter.
For Arokodare, the debut goal represents an ideal introduction to life at one of Europe’s most successful clubs and strengthens his case for increased playing time as Ajax continue preparations for the 2026/27 season.
