Army draws battle line against Lakurawa terrorists, vows no safe haven
The Nigerian Army has strengthened its security operations in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State following heightened concerns over activities of the Lakurawa terrorist group, assuring residents that the area would not be allowed to become a safe haven for terrorists.
The Nigerian Army has intensified security operations in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, following reported attacks and growing concerns over the activities of the Lakurawa terrorist group in the area.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Bemgha Paul Koughna, made this known on Sunday during an operational assessment visit to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kebbe and other affected communities.
The visit followed heightened security concerns, particularly the reported attack on Ungushi community, which raised fears among residents and prompted calls for increased military presence.
Koughna said the Army had strengthened its security architecture around vulnerable communities to prevent terrorists from establishing a foothold in the area.
He assured residents that troops remained fully deployed and alert, stressing that the Army would not allow Kebbe or neighbouring communities to become a safe corridor or operational sanctuary for terrorists.
The GOC also met with community leaders and residents to hear their concerns and obtain first-hand information on the security situation.
He urged residents not to succumb to fear or panic, assuring them that security forces were committed to protecting lives, property and livelihoods.
Koughna, however, stressed that military operations alone could not completely defeat terrorism without the active cooperation of local communities.
He therefore appealed to residents, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to provide security agencies with timely and credible information on suspicious movements, unfamiliar persons and other activities capable of threatening peace in the area.
According to him, such cooperation was crucial to detecting, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks before they could execute their plans.
The Army said it would continue to maintain a robust operational presence in the area and adapt its strategies to emerging security threats.
Koughna urged the people of Kebbe to remain vigilant, law-abiding and united with security agencies, warning that terrorists and other criminal elements would be denied the opportunity to establish a safe haven in the area.
The operational assessment was contained in a statement issued by Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army/Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, dated Aug. 16.
