AfCFTA Signs $3.1bn Customs Modernisation Deal to Boost Intra-African Trade
The AfCFTA Secretariat has signed a $3.1 billion customs modernisation agreement to improve border operations, facilitate intra-African trade and strengthen implementation of the continent's free trade area.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has signed a $3.1 billion customs modernisation agreement aimed at strengthening cross-border trade, improving customs operations and accelerating the implementation of Africa's single market. The initiative is expected to enhance the movement of goods across the continent and deepen regional economic integration.
The agreement seeks to modernise customs systems across participating member states through the deployment of digital technologies, improved border infrastructure and harmonised trade procedures. Officials said the project will reduce delays at border posts, lower the cost of doing business and facilitate faster clearance of goods.
According to the AfCFTA Secretariat, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to eliminate non-tariff barriers and improve trade efficiency under the continental free trade agreement. It is also expected to strengthen revenue collection, enhance transparency and support the growth of intra-African commerce.
Stakeholders noted that modern customs systems are critical to unlocking the full benefits of the AfCFTA, which aims to create one of the world's largest free trade areas by connecting markets across Africa. They expressed optimism that the agreement would encourage greater private sector participation and attract new investments into the continent.
The customs modernisation project is expected to be implemented in phases across member states, with participating governments working alongside development partners to ensure effective execution. The AfCFTA Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to creating a seamless trading environment that supports industrialisation, job creation and sustainable economic growth across Africa.
