The Imole Campaign Council has called on the Osun State Government to institute state honours for individuals who lost their lives or suffered injuries during incidents of electoral violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, describing them as victims who made significant sacrifices in the democratic process.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the council alleged that several supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke were killed, injured, abducted or detained because of their political affiliation during the ongoing election campaign. It said the proposed honours would recognise their sacrifices and preserve their memories.

The campaign organisation listed a number of alleged victims, claiming that many party members and grassroots coordinators had either lost their lives or suffered various forms of persecution while mobilising support for Adeleke's re-election bid. It also alleged that more than 100 supporters had been arrested and detained in recent weeks.

The council condemned what it described as politically motivated attacks on its members, urging the Nigeria Police Force to remain impartial and ensure adequate security before, during and after the governorship election. It maintained that no citizen should face intimidation or violence for participating in the democratic process.

While acknowledging that no honour or compensation could replace the lives lost, the council said official recognition would serve as a lasting tribute to the victims and reaffirm the state's commitment to justice, democracy and the protection of political rights. It added that details of the proposed honours would be announced at a later date.
