A fresh fire outbreak has razed no fewer than 50 shops at the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market in the Dakata area of Kano State.
The inferno reportedly started around 5:40 a.m. on Friday, causing panic among traders and residents in the area. The incident occurred barely one week after a devastating fire destroyed goods belonging to over 1,000 traders at Singer Market in the state.
According to Daily Trust, the chairman of the market’s fire committee, Dauda Haruna Chula, said preliminary assessments showed that at least 50 shops had already been gutted as of the time of reporting.
Chula explained that most of the affected shops were small-scale enterprises involved in oil production and the recycling of plastics and nylon. He noted that the fire was still raging while efforts were ongoing to bring it under control.
“From the preliminary assessment, about 50 shops have been destroyed and the fire is still ongoing. We are expecting personnel of the Kano State Fire Service to arrive at the scene,” he said.
He added that the market’s fire committee had contacted the fire service and other relevant emergency agencies, who confirmed they were aware of the incident and were responding.
As of press time, the cause of the fire, the extent of damage, and whether there were casualties had yet to be determined. Authorities are expected to commence a full investigation once the fire is brought under control.
