Manchester City edged closer to the top of the Premier League table after a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, a result that tightens the title race as the season enters its decisive stage.

Erling Haaland delivered the decisive blow for Pep Guardiola’s side, scoring the winner to take City within three points of Arsenal, with a game in hand that could see them move top in the coming fixtures. The result intensifies pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side, whose recent dip in form has raised concerns about their title challenge.

Arsenal actually struck first through Rayan Cherki’s brilliant solo effort, but City responded quickly after a costly mistake from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma allowed Kai Havertz to charge down a clearance and equalise.

Despite Arsenal hitting the woodwork twice and creating several dangerous chances, City’s attacking quality proved decisive. Haaland’s 34th goal of the season came in the second half when he powered home Nico O’Reilly’s cross, restoring City’s lead.

The match featured several turning points, including a huge save by Donnarumma to deny Havertz one-on-one and a goal-line clearance that stopped Martin Ødegaard from scoring on the rebound. Arsenal also saw Eberechi Eze strike the post as frustration mounted.

Tempers flared late in the game, with Gabriel Magalhães fortunate to avoid a red card after an incident involving Haaland. Arsenal continued to press, but Havertz missed a late header that could have salvaged a point.

City, who have dominated English football in recent years under Guardiola, now appear to be building momentum at a crucial stage of the season. Arsenal, meanwhile, are under pressure after a run of poor results, including multiple defeats in domestic competitions following their League Cup final loss.

With five games remaining, Arsenal still lead the table on paper, but City’s form and fixture advantage mean the title race is finely poised heading into the final stretch.
