Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United, courtesy of a stunning first-half strike from Eberechi Eze.
The Gunners had briefly surrendered first place following Manchester City’s narrow win against Burnley earlier in the week. However, Eze’s ninth-minute goal at the Emirates Stadium ensured Mikel Arteta’s men returned to the summit with a three-point cushion.
Eze’s effort — his 10th league goal of the season — proved decisive in a tense contest where Arsenal struggled to fully assert dominance despite controlling large spells. The win was particularly significant following their recent dip in form, including a damaging defeat to City that had cast doubt over their title ambitions.
Although Arsenal now lead the table, City still hold a crucial game in hand, meaning the title race remains finely balanced. Arsenal could extend their advantage further when they face Fulham, while City prepare for a trip to Everton in early May.
Newcastle, under increasing pressure, made a lively start and nearly took an early lead through Will Osula and Bruno Guimarães. But Arsenal struck quickly, capitalising on another well-executed set-piece. Martin Ødegaard combined with Kai Havertz to set up Eze, who curled a superb shot into the top corner.
The goal marked Arsenal’s 17th from a corner this season, setting a new league record and highlighting their effectiveness in dead-ball situations.
Despite the early breakthrough, Arsenal looked vulnerable at times. David Raya was tested, while injuries to Havertz and later Eze disrupted their rhythm.
Newcastle had opportunities to equalise, with Yoane Wissa missing a clear chance and Dan Burn forcing a late save.
In the end, Arsenal held on under pressure, with Arteta visibly relieved at full-time as the title race took yet another dramatic turn.
