Three soldiers have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists on a military camp in Kemanji community, located in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, when heavily armed assailants stormed the camp without prior warning. Residents in the area said they were awakened by intense gunfire as the attackers engaged soldiers in a fierce exchange.

According to sources within the community, the assault was swift and violent. The attackers allegedly took advantage of the timing, striking at about 3:00 a.m., when some of the soldiers were asleep. In the chaos that followed, three soldiers lost their lives before other personnel were able to respond.

A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described Kemanji as a border community surrounded by dense forest, a terrain that may have aided the attackers’ movement and escape. He noted that the location’s proximity to remote areas has made it vulnerable to such incursions.

Following the initial attack, surviving soldiers reportedly regrouped and launched a counterattack against the assailants. However, details about casualties on the side of the attackers remain unclear at this time.

The attack highlights ongoing security concerns in parts of the country, particularly in areas with difficult terrain that can serve as hideouts for armed groups. Communities near forested borders have increasingly faced threats due to their relative isolation and limited security presence.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, and further details are expected as investigations continue. Meanwhile, residents remain on edge, calling for increased security deployment to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of both civilians and security personnel.

Security analysts have repeatedly emphasized the need for improved intelligence gathering, better surveillance of forested regions, and stronger coordination among security agencies to address such threats effectively.

The incident adds to growing concerns over attacks on military formations, underscoring the risks faced by security personnel in the line of duty.
