PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He also approved a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion for the institution to support its commencement and infrastructure development.
According to the Presidency, the approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy based in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
The intervention fund will be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation. It is expected to finance key infrastructure projects, including academic buildings, student accommodation, training facilities, and other core assets required for effective policing education.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The meeting reportedly recommended Erinja as the location for the new campus after considering factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing recruitment expansion.
The Presidency noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve policing standards and training infrastructure across the country.
It added that President Tinubu believes the expansion of the Police Academy system will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security architecture.
