Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed willingness to step aside for any consensus candidate that may emerge from the coalition being built around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he addressed questions about unity within the coalition and the process of selecting a presidential candidate.
He explained that the focus of the coalition is not necessarily on individuals stepping aside, but on supporting whoever emerges through an agreed process. According to him, the coalition’s preferred approach is to first attempt to produce a consensus candidate.
“Atiku said the priority is to reach a consensus. If that fails, the coalition will proceed to conduct a direct primary election, and he will support whoever emerges as the candidate.”
When asked directly whether he would step aside if another aspirant, including Obi, is considered more popular, Atiku reaffirmed his stance.
He stated that he is prepared to support any candidate chosen through the process, stressing that unity remains the overriding goal of the coalition ahead of future elections.
