Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on Monday confronted former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, sparking widespread reactions.
The dramatic exchange, captured in a viral video, showed Sowore addressing Malami over his ongoing legal battles, drawing comparisons between the former minister’s current situation and his role during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“You see how it feels now to be persecuted. When you were with Buhari, you were bragging,” Sowore said, accusing Malami of ignoring warnings about flaws in Nigeria’s justice system while in office.
The confrontation occurred within the court premises and drew attention from lawyers, litigants, and observers, some of whom reacted with amusement at the unusual scene.
Sowore also invited Malami to join his Revolution Now movement, offering him a symbolic orange beret and describing it as a “revolutionary cap.”
Despite his criticism, the activist acknowledged Malami’s composure during the encounter, noting that even those once in positions of power could face similar challenges within the system.
Responding briefly, Malami maintained confidence in his legal position, stating that he had continued to attend court proceedings and remained resolute.
“I can never be down. I will keep attending, and I remain strong,” he said.
The former attorney-general is currently facing charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), including allegations of money laundering, unlawful possession of firearms, and illegal acquisition of assets.
Malami is also challenging a court order for the temporary forfeiture of some of his properties, insisting they were lawfully acquired.
The incident has since generated significant online debate, with many Nigerians reacting to the exchange and its broader implications for accountability and justice.
