Residents of Okpuitumo community in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, are counting heavy losses after a devastating windstorm destroyed homes, businesses, and a church building.
The early morning storm, which struck around 3:00 a.m. at Gmelina Junction, caused widespread damage, with properties worth hundreds of millions of naira affected. Among the worst hit was the Assemblies of God Church in the community, whose building was completely destroyed, leaving members to worship in open spaces.
Roofs were torn off several buildings, shops were damaged, and goods were soaked by rain. Farmers also suffered major setbacks as crops and storage facilities were destroyed.
The pastor of the affected church, Moses Odorimo, described the incident as shocking, explaining that the structure collapsed between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., destroying church property including chairs, instruments, and the pulpit.
Victims recounted severe personal losses. A widow, Mrs Nwadurunne Uguru, said her home was damaged and food supplies destroyed, while farmer Mr Goddy Nwogha reported losing yams worth millions after a tree fell on his barn. Poultry farmer Chioma Nweke also lost over 1,000 birds when her facility was destroyed.
A shop owner, Onyekachi Eze, said goods worth millions were ruined after the roof of his store was blown off, leaving his wares exposed to rain.
Although no lives were lost, some residents sustained minor injuries. Affected individuals have appealed to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent assistance.
They specifically called on Governor Francis Nwifuru to support recovery efforts, as many struggle to rebuild their livelihoods after the disaster.
