The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed a viral infographic claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, describing it as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dare Adekambi, the agency said the message circulating online, which alleged that vehicle owners would begin paying a new tax from July 1, did not originate from any official government source.

The fake notice reportedly directed owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to make payments online or through designated banks, and also referenced an incorrect website link, further raising concerns about its authenticity.

Adekambi clarified that the Federal Government has not introduced any new vehicle tax, stressing that Nigerians should disregard the information entirely.

He noted that the infographic also misrepresented official communication channels by linking to a different website, while the correct official portal remains that of the NRS.

According to him, the service has not announced any policy introducing fresh levies on vehicles and urged the public to rely strictly on verified platforms for tax-related information.

“The information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” he said, adding that the content was deliberately designed to mislead the public.

The NRS warned Nigerians to be cautious of unverified content circulating on social media, especially messages lacking identifiable authors or official confirmation.

It advised citizens to follow only its verified social media handles and official website for accurate updates on tax policies and other government fiscal matters.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and public communication, urging Nigerians to verify all tax-related information before taking action.
