Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, has said the recent surge in insecurity across Nigeria is politically motivated ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Akpabio alleged that the rising attacks were aimed at discrediting President Bola Tinubu and undermining his administration. He expressed confidence that the situation would subside shortly after the elections.
“You are seeing insecurity today. It is even increasing because elections are coming,” he said, adding that some actors were deliberately fueling unrest to create distractions.
According to him, the attacks and bombings would diminish within weeks after the electoral process, suggesting a direct link between political activities and security challenges.
Akpabio maintained that Nigerians still strongly support Tinubu and would vote massively for his re-election despite ongoing concerns. He argued that the President’s policies, particularly in revenue generation and fiscal reforms, have gained widespread acceptance across the country.
He also claimed that Tinubu’s growing political influence, including increased support from governors and other political stakeholders, has intensified tensions among opponents ahead of the polls.
The Senate President concluded that the current security challenges should be viewed within the broader context of political competition as the 2027 elections approach.
