The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has raised fresh concerns over the readiness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general elections, accusing the electoral body of persistently disobeying court orders.
In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the party warned that such actions could undermine the electoral process and derail preparations for the 2027 polls.
The NNPP described INEC’s conduct as “both unbelievable and disturbing,” especially considering that the Commission is led by individuals with strong legal backgrounds.
The party referenced a judgment by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, which directed INEC to update its records within 72 hours, recognise the Dr. Agbo Major Gilbert-led National Working Committee (NWC), and file an affidavit of compliance.
According to the statement, three weeks after the ruling, INEC had yet to comply, without providing any credible explanation. The party stressed that the Commission was duly served with the court order, with proof of service properly recorded.
“It therefore stands to reason that INEC must accord the NNPP adequate and equal time, like other political parties, to prepare for and participate in the 2027 elections,” Oginni stated.
The party further disclosed that it had initiated contempt proceedings against INEC and vowed to pursue the matter up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The NNPP also called for urgent intervention by the Federal Government and key stakeholders to prevent further complications in the electoral process.
It specifically urged the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; the Chief Justice of Nigeria; and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate the situation within INEC.
