The Federal Government on Tuesday launched a new digital website for the Federal Character Commission (FCC) as part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance in public administration.
The unveiling ceremony took place in Abuja and was performed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who described the initiative as a major step in modernising the operations of the commission and improving trust in government institutions.
Akume said the FCC plays a constitutional role in ensuring fair and equitable representation of all parts of the country in federal appointments and public service structures. He stressed that the principle of federal character is not only a legal requirement but also a foundation for national unity and stability.
According to him, the introduction of a digital platform reflects the need for governance systems to evolve in line with modern realities driven by technology, data management, and public demand for openness.
He explained that the new website should go beyond a basic online presence and function as an active governance tool that supports service delivery and accountability. The platform, he said, is expected to provide real-time access to data, official guidelines, certification processes, and public information related to the commission’s activities.
Akume further urged the FCC to adopt data-driven decision-making, publish compliance reports, and make federal character indices accessible to the public in a transparent and verifiable manner.
He commended the leadership of the commission for embracing digital reform, noting that it would help strengthen public confidence in government operations.
Also speaking at the event, the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Mrs Laila Jibrin, described the initiative as an important milestone in institutional development and national cohesion. She said the platform aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital transformation and inclusive governance.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of the FCC, Mrs Hulayat Omidiran, said the website represents a new phase in improving communication, efficiency, and service delivery. She added that it would enhance engagement between the commission, government institutions, and the public.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Idris Wase, also praised the initiative, describing it as a step toward improved transparency, compliance monitoring, and equitable access to opportunities in public service.
