The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has directed its newly elected state executives and other party officers to refrain from assuming office, stressing that the current leadership will remain in charge until the official transition is completed.
The party said the move is necessary to prevent confusion and avoid any potential power struggle within its ranks. It maintained that a clear and orderly handover process is in place, with the formal inauguration scheduled for May 12, 2026, or any later date that may be communicated.
This position was made known in a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the tenure of the newly elected executives will only begin after the expiration of the current leadership’s term and their formal inauguration by the party.
“The tenure of all newly elected state executives and other party officers shall not commence until the expiration of the tenure of the current executives and their formal inauguration by the party on May 12, 2026, or on any later date that may be officially communicated,” the statement read.
The party further emphasized that all existing executives remain the legally recognised officers until the transition process is fully concluded.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all existing executives remain the duly recognised officers of the party until the completion of this constitutional transition process,” it added.
ADC also cautioned incoming officials, particularly at the state level, against taking any steps that could create tension or lead to parallel authority structures within the party.
“Accordingly, all newly elected executives, particularly at the state level, are advised to desist from any action or conduct that may contravene this directive or create confusion within the party structure,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its commitment to internal order, the party noted that the transition would be guided strictly by its constitution and democratic principles, ensuring discipline and stability throughout the process.
