The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area (LGA) in Akwa Ibom State, Honourable Aniefiok Nkom, has issued a passionate call for unity and collaboration to preserve the “unparalleled legacy” of the council’s founding fathers. Speaking during a world press conference on Friday, April 17, 2026, to unveil the activities marking the “Diamond Jubilee” (75th Anniversary) of the council, the Chairman emphasized that Ikot Ekpene remains a “historic pacesetter” in Nigerian governance. As the first “Experimental County Council” in British West Africa, established in 1951, the Chairman maintained that the current generation has a “moral and civic obligation” to ensure that the “premier status” of the area is translated into sustainable modern development.

The Diamond Jubilee celebration, themed “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future, Making the First, the Best,” is designed to be a “rebirth” rather than just a ceremonial event. Honourable Aniefiok Nkom recalled the “singular act of vision” by pioneers such as Chief Robert Umoinyang, who became the first indigenous chairman on April 11, 1951. Supporting context from the council’s secretariat indicates that the anniversary will feature the inauguration of several “Legacy Projects,” including a modernized “Digital Library,” the “Annang Cultural Heritage Center,” and the upgrading of local markets to “smart commerce hubs.” The Chairman stressed that “being first is a privilege, but staying first is a responsibility,” urging the political class to set aside partisan differences for the sake of the council’s progress.

Stakeholder reactions to the Chairman’s call have been overwhelmingly positive, with the “Traditional Rulers Council” of Ikot Ekpene pledging their “full cooperation” for the anniversary events. The “Ikot Ekpene Elders’ Forum” lauded the administration for its “respect for history,” noting that the story of the council is the story of “Nigeria’s transition from colonial rule to self-governance.” However, some youth groups have urged the local government to ensure that the “rebirth” includes “tangible job opportunities” and “vocational training” for the younger generation. They argued that the “best way to honor the past is to secure the future” through economic empowerment and the “re-industrialization” of the area.

Public administration and historical analysts observe that Ikot Ekpene’s 75th anniversary is a significant milestone for “local government autonomy” in Nigeria. Experts suggest that the “Ikot Ekpene Experiment” of 1951 provided the blueprint for the current three-tier system of government. They argue that the Chairman’s focus on “unity and legacy” is essential to combat the “political fragmentation” that often hampers development at the grassroots level. Dr. Udeme Etuk, a specialist in political history, noted that Ikot Ekpene’s “craftsmanship and commercial spirit” are its greatest assets, and the “Diamond Jubilee” should be used to attract “foreign direct investment” (FDI) into the state’s manufacturing sector.

The broader implications of this “unity call” point toward a “strengthened social contract” in Akwa Ibom’s premier council. By celebrating the 75-year journey, the Nkom administration is fostering a sense of “civic pride” that can drive “community-led development.” The anniversary is also expected to draw “Ikot Ekpene indigenes in the Diaspora” back home, creating a platform for “knowledge transfer” and “philanthropic investment.” As the “Diamond Jubilee” activities commence, the focus remains on the “inclusivity of the celebrations” and the “longevity of the projects” being commissioned. For the people of the “Raffia City,” the call for unity is a reminder that their “first-in-class” history is the foundation upon which their future greatness must be built.
