The Lafiagi Emirates Youth Transparency Association (LEYTA) in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State has expressed strong opposition to the reported plan to convert the NYSC Orientation Camp in Yikpata into a temporary camp for displaced Fulani communities from Kwara South Senatorial District.
In a statement on Wednesday, LEYTA warned that relocating displaced populations to Edu LGA, an area already grappling with insecurity, could worsen the fragile security situation. Residents have endured frequent attacks, killings, and kidnappings, including the abduction of 176 people from Woro community and violent incidents in Gbugbu and Bachitagi communities.
The association questioned why the state government could not consider safer alternatives within Kwara South or neutral locations, such as the Kwara State Stadium Complex in Ilorin, for temporary accommodation. LEYTA stressed that adding displaced persons to a region already under pressure could strain the overstretched security system and heighten tensions.
The group called for the immediate review of the Yikpata decision and urged authorities to relocate the proposed camp to a safer and more suitable location. It also demanded the urgent rescue of the 176 abducted residents of Woro community and the implementation of a comprehensive security strategy for Edu LGA and the wider state, including increased deployment of security forces, intelligence-driven operations, and stronger community engagement.
LEYTA emphasised that the matter transcends politics and centers on the safety and survival of residents. The association urged the state government to act swiftly and responsibly to prevent further escalation of insecurity, warning that Edu LGA cannot bear additional burdens under the current volatile conditions.
The statement reflects growing concerns among communities in Kwara North about the potential risks of hosting displaced populations in insecure areas, highlighting the need for careful planning and prioritisation of security in state policies.
