The National President of the Millet Farmers Association, Umar Abdullahi, has warned that Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress could face serious political consequences ahead of the 2027 general elections if Vice President Kashim Shettima is replaced.
Abdullahi made the statement on Thursday during an interview on Trust TV, amid rising speculation that the ruling party may consider changes to its presidential ticket ahead of the next election cycle.
According to Abdullahi, Shettima’s continued presence in government has provided confidence and reassurance to farmers across the country. He said many stakeholders within the agricultural sector believe that meaningful strategies and policies have already been initiated under the current administration and should be sustained. He stressed that stability and continuity are critical, adding that there is no justifiable basis for altering the vice presidential slot.
He described the Vice President as loyal, competent, and effective in carrying out the responsibilities of his office. Abdullahi noted that Shettima has consistently represented Nigeria well, including at international engagements, and has met expectations placed on him since assuming office.
The farmers’ leader cautioned that removing Shettima could have serious political implications for the ruling party. He stated that a significant number of farmers supported the APC in the last election largely because of the Muslim Muslim ticket. According to him, replacing the Vice President without a clear and credible explanation would alienate many supporters within the farming community and beyond.
Abdullahi emphasised that farmers are not professional politicians and have no reason to make false claims or engage in political propaganda. He pointed out that his appearance on television was his first, underscoring the depth of concern within the agricultural community over the issue. He argued that if the APC intends to replace Shettima, Nigerians deserve to know what he has done wrong to justify such a decision.
He concluded that retaining the current ticket would help preserve trust, political balance, and goodwill, particularly among farmers who believe the present administration reflects their expectations and interests as the 2027 elections approach.
