The Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN, Kudirat Kekere Ekun, on Wednesday swore in Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, restoring the apex court to its full constitutional strength.
Justice Oyewole’s elevation brings the Supreme Court back to its complete complement of 21 justices as stipulated under Section 230 subsection 2 paragraph b of the 1999 Constitution as amended. The swearing in ceremony was held at the Supreme Court complex, where the CJN administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Judicial Oath on the new jurist.
Speaking at the event, Justice Kekere Ekun described the occasion as one of significant institutional importance, noting that a full bench would enhance the court’s capacity to address its growing backlog of cases. She said numerical completeness strengthens the court’s ability to sit in robust panels, improves efficiency in handling its docket, and reinforces the stability and depth of the nation’s jurisprudence.
According to her, the authority of the Supreme Court is rooted not in force but in the moral strength of its reasoning, the discipline of its processes, and the integrity of those who serve on its bench. She stressed that appointment to the apex court represents not only professional distinction but also the acceptance of a profound national responsibility.
The CJN described Justice Oyewole’s elevation as a testament to his years of disciplined scholarship, fidelity to the law, and distinguished service to the judiciary. She highlighted his intellectual depth, independence of thought, and clarity of expression as qualities essential for a justice of the apex court.
Justice Kekere Ekun also urged the new justice to remain courageous and principled, encouraging him not to shy away from dissenting opinions where his conscience and understanding of the law so demand. She noted that principled dissent, when expressed with courtesy and intellectual honesty, often contributes to the growth of legal doctrine.
Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Oyewole served as the presiding justice of the Court of Appeal Enugu Division.
