A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated early Wednesday along the Gusau–Funtua highway, triggering panic among motorists and residents in the area.
The incident was disclosed by security analyst Bakastine, who said the explosive device was believed to have been planted by armed bandits operating in the region. According to available information, the blast occurred between Kuceri and Magazu villages in Tsafe Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that a fully loaded commercial trailer transporting cement drove over the device, setting off the explosion. Although details regarding casualties and the extent of damage were still unclear at the time of filing this report, eyewitnesses said the blast caused widespread fear, forcing motorists to temporarily abandon the route.
The Gusau–Funtua highway is a critical transport corridor linking communities in Zamfara and Katsina states and is frequently used by traders, commercial drivers, and commuters. In recent times, the route has witnessed repeated security threats, including bandit attacks and kidnappings, raising concerns about the safety of travelers.
Following Wednesday’s explosion, residents and community leaders in affected areas called on security agencies to urgently step up patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering along the highway. They stressed that increased security presence is necessary to deter criminal elements and reassure road users.
Community members also appealed to the federal and state governments to take decisive action to restore safety on major roads across Zamfara State. Many residents offered prayers for the victims of the blast and expressed hope for lasting peace and stability in the region, noting that continued insecurity has disrupted economic activities and daily life.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, as investigations into the explosion continue.
