The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening border security, improving veterans’ welfare, and reviewing key defence policy documents to reposition Nigeria’s national security architecture against emerging threats.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (rtd), made this known while receiving members of the Alumni Association of the National Defence College in Abuja. The disclosure was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Enderline Chukwu.

Musa said Nigeria’s security environment remains fluid and increasingly complex, necessitating regular reviews of existing defence frameworks. He noted that critical documents such as the National Defence Policy and its Implementation Guidelines must be updated to reflect current domestic and global security realities.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s Armed Forces and institutional frameworks must continuously evolve to effectively respond to emerging threats. He disclosed that the ministry would engage the Permanent Secretary and other strategic stakeholders to initiate structured consultations aimed at reviewing defence policies and related instruments.

On border security, Musa described effective border management as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national security strategy. He stressed the need for enhanced surveillance systems and stronger inter-agency coordination to monitor cross-border movements, noting that improved border control would significantly curb transnational crimes and other security threats.

The minister also highlighted the importance of prioritising the welfare of military veterans, stating that personnel who served the nation meritoriously deserve sustained post-service care. He said the ministry is reviewing existing frameworks to improve healthcare access, welfare benefits, and support systems for retired personnel, in line with global best practices.

Earlier, the President of AANDEC, Patrick Agholor (rtd), commended the minister’s leadership and pledged the association’s support through research, advisory services, and policy engagement. The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Richard Pheelangwa, and other senior officials.
