The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Kasim Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory, following Saturday’s area council polls.
Mohammed emerged victorious in a keenly contested election, polling a total of 22,165 votes to secure a decisive win. His closest challenger, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered 17,788 votes.
Announcing the results after the conclusion of collation, the INEC Returning Officer for the election, Philip Akpen, confirmed that Mohammed satisfied all constitutional and legal requirements to be declared the duly elected chairman. Akpen described the conduct of the election as largely peaceful and orderly, noting that the process ran smoothly despite the competitive nature of the contest.
The PDP’s victory was attributed to strong grassroots mobilisation and impressive performances across several key wards within the area council, where voter turnout was relatively higher compared to other parts of the FCT. Supporters of the party credited the outcome to sustained engagement with residents and effective campaign strategies.
However, the election was not without challenges. There were reports of voter intimidation, allegations of vote buying, and heightened security presence at some polling units. Despite these concerns, INEC maintained that the integrity of the process was preserved and that the final result reflected the true will of the electorate.
Following the declaration, Gwagwalada town erupted in celebration as jubilant PDP supporters took to the streets, chanting party slogans and waving flags. The victory was hailed by party faithful as a triumph for democracy and the people of the area council.
As celebrations continue, attention now shifts to the response of opposition parties, while INEC has reiterated its assurance that due process was strictly followed throughout the election.
