Tension gripped Polling Unit 141 at LEA Primary School, Karamajiji, in Registration Area Gwarinpa (Area Code 05), on Saturday, as suspected political thugs reportedly loitered around the premises, disrupting the smooth commencement of voting in the ongoing Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
Election materials arrived at the polling unit at about 9:03 a.m., well after the official commencement time. However, accreditation and voting did not begin immediately, as electoral officials struggled to organise the process amid security concerns. Verification of voters eventually commenced at approximately 10:10 a.m., more than an hour after the arrival of materials.
Although security operatives were deployed to the polling centre, the presence of suspected thugs and party agents within and around the premises raised concerns among voters. Several party affiliates were observed standing by, while groups of unfamiliar individuals lingered close to the school, creating an atmosphere of unease.
Some residents who arrived early at the polling unit said the situation caused anxiety, particularly among elderly voters and first-time participants. Speaking in low tones, they expressed fear that the presence of suspected thugs could escalate into violence or voter intimidation if not properly managed.
Despite the tense environment, electoral officials continued preparations, while security personnel maintained a visible presence to deter any breakdown of law and order. Voters were advised to remain calm and orderly as the process gradually got underway.
As of the time of filing this report, accreditation was ongoing under tight security. Voters expressed cautious optimism that the exercise would proceed peacefully, urging authorities to sustain security at the polling unit and across Gwarinpa to ensure a credible and hitch-free election process.
