Hundreds of residents from Borgu Local Government Area have fled to neighbouring Benin Republic following renewed bandit attacks, according to Abdurrahman Bala Gambo, a member of the House of Representatives representing Borgu and surrounding areas.

Gambo told BBC Hausa that attackers invaded Konkoso, forcing residents to flee before any casualties occurred.

“Most of the people ran to Benin Republic since many of them have family ties there. The bandits returned to the town, and when they saw that nobody was left, they set it on fire,” Gambo said.

Reports indicate that the attacks affected villages across Borgu and Agwara Local Government Areas, leaving several homes destroyed. Many displaced residents have lost shelter and means of livelihood, prompting them to seek refuge across the border.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity told the BBC that villagers abandoned their belongings, including food and clothing, as they fled. “When the attackers returned and found no one, they burned everything. Those who escaped to Benin Republic are now relatively safe because the government there is fighting the bandits,” the witness said.

Authorities have yet to release further details on the scale of the destruction or ongoing security measures in the affected areas.
