The African Democratic Congress ADC has criticised remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, describing them as inappropriate in the context of preparations for upcoming area council elections. The party alleged that statements suggesting political confrontation risk escalating tensions within the capital territory.

ADC officials argued that elections should be guided by democratic competition rather than combative rhetoric. They called for moderation and respect for electoral rules, stating that the FCT remains a symbol of national unity and should not become a theatre of political hostility.

In response, allies of the minister maintained that the remarks were taken out of context. They insisted that Wike merely emphasised the need for political discipline and adherence to campaign guidelines. According to them, safeguarding order during elections is part of administrative responsibility.

Political observers say heightened rhetoric often accompanies local elections, particularly in strategic territories such as the FCT. Analysts warn that strong language from influential figures may influence public perception and voter sentiment.

Security agencies have reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining peace during the electoral process. They emphasised readiness to prevent disruptions and enforce compliance with electoral laws.

Electoral stakeholders stress that confidence in the process depends on constructive engagement by all parties. They urge political actors to focus on policy proposals rather than confrontation.

As campaigns gather momentum, residents of the FCT are watching closely, hoping that the elections will reflect democratic maturity and peaceful competition.
