The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a total budget of ₦873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.
The proposal was presented on Thursday by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a budget defence session before a joint committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Electoral Matters.
According to Amupitan, the proposed sum is structured across five major expenditure components designed to ensure the smooth planning and execution of the nationwide polls.
A significant portion of the budget, ₦375.75 billion has been earmarked for election operations. This covers core activities such as logistics, personnel deployment, training of ad hoc staff, transportation of sensitive materials, and other field operations necessary for the conduct of elections across the federation.
The commission also allocated ₦209.21 billion to election technology, reflecting the increasing reliance on digital systems for voter accreditation, result transmission, and data management. The technology component represents one of the largest segments of the proposed expenditure, underscoring INEC’s emphasis on strengthening electoral integrity through technological innovation.
Additionally, ₦92.31 billion has been designated for election administrative costs, while ₦154.90 billion is proposed for capital expenditure related to infrastructure and equipment. A further ₦41.61 billion is set aside for miscellaneous expenses.
INEC stated that the proposed budget is aimed at ensuring adequate preparation for the 2027 general elections and maintaining the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of Nigeria’s electoral process.
