The Edo State Government has expressed concern over the growing number of widows and fatherless children resulting from cult-related killings in the state.
John Izegaegbe, Secretary of the Edo State Special Security Squad, also known as “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” highlighted the issue on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, during the launch of the state’s campaign against cultism and drug abuse in Benin City. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate with the government in tackling drug abuse, cultism, and related crimes.
Izegaegbe explained that the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration has taken the campaign directly to schools to sensitize students about the dangers of cultism and drug abuse, emphasizing the importance of engaging children early.
Earlier, Idemudia Noah, Coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad and Principal Security Officer to Governor Okpebholo, noted that the state has declared zero tolerance for cultism and drug abuse. This led to the establishment of the Special Security Squad, which, alongside other security agencies, has visited schools including Ihogbe College, Akenzua Senior Secondary School, and Edo Boys High School as part of the campaign.
Noah said the initiative, which began in Edo South, will be extended to Edo Central and Edo North senatorial districts to ensure the message reaches all communities.
Former House of Representatives member Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma described cultism, drug abuse, and substance dependency as major social threats that endanger communities and destroy young lives. He urged students to disassociate themselves from these vices, warning of the long-term consequences.
Mr. Usiobafo Nicholas, Junior Principal of Edo Boys High School, commended the governor’s initiative and advocated for the creation of anti-cultism clubs in secondary schools across the state.
Students, including Head Girl Aisosa Osakpamwan and Head Boy Blessed Edomwonyi of Ihogbe College, expressed appreciation for the timely campaign, noting that it would help curb cultism in schools across Edo State.
