The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan ahead of the 2026 Lagos City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026, warning that several major roads will be closed for up to 12 hours during the event.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced on Wednesday that the marathon will feature both 42-kilometre and 10-kilometre races, which will take place simultaneously along designated routes across the metropolis.
The full marathon will start at Ahmadu Bello Way, near the MRS Gas Station, and proceed along the entire stretch of the Coastal Road before reaching the finishing line. The 10-kilometre race will kick off at Durosimi Etti in Lekki Phase 1, moving through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Bishop Oluwole Street, and Akin Adesola Street, before concluding at Sanusi Fafunwa Street.
Osiyemi explained that all adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections along the marathon routes will be closed from 12:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with intermittent reopening as the race progresses. This measure is intended to ensure the safety of participants and facilitate the smooth conduct of the event.
To manage traffic and prevent unauthorized access to the race corridors, officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and various security agencies will be deployed across affected areas. Motorists and residents are being encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, utilise alternative routes, and consider other modes of transport where possible.
The commissioner appealed for patience from the public, emphasising that the temporary disruptions are necessary to support the successful staging of the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2026.
Affected commuters are advised to stay updated on traffic advisories and cooperate with traffic officials throughout the event period.
