The United States Congress has stated that Nigeria’s designation under the Country of Particular Concern category will not weaken diplomatic relations between both nations.

A congressional spokesperson explained that the designation was a policy tool meant to encourage dialogue and reforms rather than impose punishment.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria remains a strategic partner in West Africa particularly in security economic growth and regional stability.

According to him diplomatic engagements between both countries continue across multiple sectors including trade education and counter terrorism.

Nigerian officials have also responded saying the government is committed to addressing concerns raised by international partners.

Foreign affairs experts believe the designation could open new channels for cooperation on human rights and security improvements.

They noted that similar designations in the past have not stopped strong bilateral engagements with other countries.

Civil society groups have called for constructive engagement rather than diplomatic tension.

The statement from Congress appears to have reassured stakeholders worried about potential sanctions.
