France has suspended all development and budgetary assistance to Burkina Faso Mali and Niger following growing diplomatic tensions between Paris and the three Sahel nations. The decision comes after the military led governments of the three countries rejected what they described as continued foreign interference in their internal affairs and resource control.
Authorities in Burkina Faso Mali and Niger accused France of using aid and military cooperation as tools of pressure. They said recent Western actions including visa restrictions border closures and sanctions had worsened humanitarian conditions particularly in the health and education sectors.
In response the three countries expelled French diplomats withdrew from the ECOWAS bloc and strengthened cooperation under the Alliance of Sahel States. They have also pursued new partnerships with non Western allies to support security and development efforts.
Government officials across the Sahel insist that sovereignty and self determination must take priority over foreign assistance. They argue that African solutions must be developed for African challenges without external control.
