A factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Taminu Turaki, on Saturday led a delegation of senior party leaders on a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The delegation included former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Taofeek Arapaja, former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, and Ambassador Folake Marcus Bello, among other party stalwarts.

On arrival in Abeokuta, the delegation was received by the Ogun State Chairman of the PDP, Abayomi Tella, alongside other state party executives, before proceeding to a closed door meeting with the former president.

The purpose of the visit was not officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report, as details of the discussions were kept away from the media. None of the party leaders addressed journalists after the meeting.

However, the visit is coming against the backdrop of deepening internal crises within the PDP, which has been battling leadership disputes, internal divisions, and growing uncertainty over its political direction ahead of future elections.

The party has also been hit by a series of high profile defections in recent months, further weakening its position as the main opposition party in the country.

Notably, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the PDP of failing to protect his political interests.

Similarly, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, resigned from the PDP and subsequently joined the Accord Party, where he secured its governorship ticket ahead of the August 2026 election.

Political analysts believe the visit to Obasanjo may be part of wider consultations aimed at resolving the party’s internal crisis and stemming further defections.
