The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the killing of a suspect by a police officer in Delta State, describing the act as a grave violation of the rule of law.
The reaction follows a viral video showing a suspect, identified as Oghenemine Ogidi, seated with his hands tied behind his back before being shot by an officer—an incident that has triggered widespread outrage and calls for justice.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer involved, ASP Usman Nuhu, has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary action.
Reacting, NBA President Afam Osigwe said no law enforcement officer has the authority to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner.
“This incident represents an arbitrary and unacceptable use of power by a law enforcement agent,” he said, noting that the act violates the constitutional presumption of innocence and undermines public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
Osigwe warned that unchecked abuses by security personnel could erode fundamental rights and encourage a culture of impunity.
He called for a thorough, transparent, and swift investigation, stressing that accountability must extend to all officers involved or present at the scene.
“The investigation must cover any personnel who aided, abetted, or failed to prevent the killing,” he added.
The NBA also directed its Human Rights and Civil Liberties Committees, alongside branches in Warri, Effurun, and Udu, to monitor the case closely.
Reiterating the need for comprehensive police reforms, the association emphasised accountability and proper use of force, while expressing solidarity with the victim’s family and pledging to pursue justice.
