The Nigerian Correctional Service in Yobe State has declared a convicted inmate wanted after he escaped following a road accident involving a prison transport vehicle.
The incident occurred on April 13 along the Potiskum–Damaturu road while inmates were being conveyed from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum to Damaturu.
This was disclosed in an official statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Adamu.
According to the statement, the vehicle conveying the inmates was involved in a crash, creating a chaotic situation as efforts were made to rescue victims. Amid the confusion, one of the inmates managed to flee the scene.
The escapee has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old man from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa. He was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024, and bears the prison identification number J/1539/24.
Authorities have described the fugitive as dangerous and warned members of the public to avoid any form of contact with him.
The command urged anyone with useful information about his whereabouts to immediately report to the nearest police station or correctional facility. Residents were also asked to remain vigilant, particularly around the Potiskum–Damaturu axis where the incident occurred.
Officials further warned that harbouring a fugitive is a criminal offence punishable under the law, stressing the importance of public cooperation in ensuring the inmate is quickly returned to custody.
Emergency contact lines have been provided to facilitate information sharing with security agencies as the search operation continues.
The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and ensuring that all escapees are apprehended without delay.
