Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that the 2027 presidential election will mark his final attempt to lead Nigeria as president. He made this known during an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired by Arise Television on Wednesday.
Atiku, who has been a consistent figure in Nigeria’s presidential politics since 1992, stated clearly that he does not intend to contest for the presidency beyond 2027. His declaration puts to rest long-standing speculation about how many more times he plans to seek the nation’s top office.
“The 2027 election will be my last outing,” he said during the interview, emphasising his commitment to making one final bid for the presidency.
When questioned about why Nigerians should consider voting for him after multiple previous attempts, especially in light of concerns about age and political longevity, Atiku responded by pointing to what he described as Nigeria’s persistent leadership challenges. According to him, the country’s struggles are largely tied to ineffective leadership, and he believes he has both the experience and vision required to address these issues.
He further described himself as a bridge between generations, noting that he represents both the past and the future of Nigeria. Atiku argued that his long-standing involvement in governance and politics has equipped him with a deep understanding of the nation’s problems, as well as the capacity to implement meaningful solutions.
In addition to his political ambitions, the former Vice President stressed the importance of grooming the next generation of leaders. He advocated for structured leadership training programmes for young Nigerians, insisting that such initiatives are essential for building a stronger and more capable leadership pipeline for the country.
Atiku’s remarks come at a time when discussions around leadership quality, succession, and youth inclusion continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
