The pan Yoruba socio political organization Afenifere has criticized the removal of a certificate requirement clause in the proposed amendment to Nigeria’s Electoral Act by the House of Representatives. The Electoral Act is the legislation that governs the conduct of elections in Nigeria including candidate eligibility rules and electoral procedures.

Afenifere expressed concern that removing the certificate clause could weaken accountability standards within the electoral system. The group argued that educational requirements for candidates serve as an important safeguard for democratic governance.

The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly responsible for lawmaking and oversight of government activities. Lawmakers recently debated proposed amendments to the Electoral Act as part of ongoing efforts to improve electoral processes.

Supporters of the amendment argue that certain provisions within the existing law require modernization to reflect evolving political realities. However critics believe that removing the certificate clause may create loopholes that could undermine transparency.

Political analysts say electoral law reforms often generate intense debate because they directly influence the conduct of elections and the qualifications required for political office.

Afenifere urged lawmakers to reconsider the decision and ensure that any amendments strengthen democratic standards rather than weaken them.

The group emphasized that credible elections depend on strong legal frameworks and transparent processes.

Observers expect further debate on the issue as the proposed amendment continues to move through the legislative process.
