A former member of the House of Representatives, Dachung Bagos, has attributed the rising wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party to what he described as the party’s failure and inability to provide credible leadership.
Bagos, who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, stated this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said politicians leaving the PDP were not motivated by personal ambition but by the need to align with platforms that could effectively represent the interests of their people.
According to him, many defectors believe the PDP no longer offers a viable structure to address national and local challenges.
“We are not moving because of ambition or sycophancy. We are moving because the PDP has failed at this point and has become irredeemable,” he said.
Bagos represented Jos South and Jos East Federal Constituency in Plateau State from 2019 until November 2023. He officially joined the APC on January 4, 2026, alongside several political stakeholders loyal to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.
The defection followed Governor Mutfwang’s recent resignation from the PDP, citing prolonged internal crises and lack of direction within the opposition party.
Bagos explained that his decision to join the APC was informed by the party’s policy agenda, which he said aligns with the aspirations of the people of Plateau State.
He stressed that governance should be driven by solutions rather than party affiliation.
The former lawmaker also commended President Bola Tinubu for re emphasising key governance issues such as state police and local government autonomy.
He said these reforms would strengthen grassroots governance and encourage wider participation in politics, particularly among young people.
According to him, the goal is to build a political system where ordinary citizens can aspire to leadership and regain confidence in the democratic process.
