Popular Nigerian businessman and internet personality, Isaac Fayose, has explained why he withdrew his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the government of prioritising political ambition over national welfare.

Speaking during an interview on Saturday, Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, said he initially backed the administration but changed his stance after observing what he described as desperation for a second term in office.

According to him, the government appears more focused on consolidating political power ahead of the 2027 general elections than addressing pressing security and economic challenges facing Nigerians.

“I used to support this government before, but when I noticed that they are selfish and desperate for a second term, and they don’t care about who is dying, I began to hate the government,” he said.

Fayose criticised what he alleged to be moves aimed at weakening opposition parties, pointing to the defection of several governors and internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as evidence of political manoeuvring.

“This administration is selfish and desperate for a second term. Look at how many governors have decamped, look at what they are doing to the PDP,” he added.

He further warned against what he described as attempts to steer Nigeria toward a one-party state, arguing that a strong opposition is fundamental to democratic governance.

“You are turning the country into a one-party state because of your own selfish interests. The beauty of democracy is the opposition. When you kill opposition just for your own gain, that is selfishness,” Fayose stated.

His remarks add to ongoing debates surrounding governance, security and the state of opposition politics in the country.
