Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has admitted that security agencies under his administration failed to act promptly on credible intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS) prior to the deadly attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.

The dawn attack, carried out by armed bandits, led to the killing of the school’s Vice Principal and the abduction of 25 female students, sparking widespread outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in the North-West.

Speaking during a visit to the affected community, Governor Idris said the DSS had earlier issued a clear warning about an imminent attack on the school. According to him, although an emergency security meeting was held following the intelligence report, the agencies responsible for executing the protective measures did not act decisively.

“The DSS gave us credible intelligence. We convened a security council meeting immediately, but sadly, we failed to act fast and effectively enough to prevent this tragedy. This is unacceptable, and we must take responsibility,” he said.

Idris further disclosed that security personnel who were assigned to guard the school reportedly withdrew shortly before the attackers arrived, a situation he described as suspicious and worthy of thorough investigation.

In response, the governor announced the constitution of a special investigation panel to uncover the circumstances that led to the security lapse, including why officers abandoned their posts despite intelligence alerts.

He assured parents and residents that government forces — including police, military units, and local vigilantes — are already conducting coordinated operations to rescue the abducted students and restore calm to the area.

Governor Idris also vowed that those found negligent or complicit in the security failure would face strict disciplinary action.
