The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning against visa fraud, cautioning that such actions could lead to increased scrutiny for other Nigerian visa applicants.
In a post on X yesterday, the Mission said the United States maintains a rigorous screening process to protect the integrity of its visa system and urged Nigerians to report fraudulent visa activities to the appropriate authorities. According to the statement, individuals who engage in fraud place additional scrutiny on all applicants, as US visa officers take violations very seriously.
The Mission noted that many Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors, stressing that compliance with visa rules helps preserve access for genuine travellers.
The warning follows a similar advisory issued on February 9, when the US highlighted frequent visa overstays by some Nigerian travellers as a key factor limiting future opportunities for other applicants. The Mission explained that improved compliance would help safeguard visa access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.
The advisory comes amid long-standing concerns by US consular authorities over visa fraud linked to a small fraction of applications from Nigeria. In the past, these concerns have led to policy measures such as reduced visa validity for certain Nigerian travellers and more intensive background checks, as the US Department of State seeks to protect the integrity of its immigration system.
