Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has acknowledged that the club’s blockbuster move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has placed a heavy financial burden on the Turkish champions, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen arrived from Napoli in the summer after a long and complicated transfer chase. The deal became the most expensive in Turkish football history, surpassing the previous €30 million transfer record.
Alongside the fee, Galatasaray handed him the highest salary package ever seen in Turkish football, with the full cost of the operation, fee plus wages, projected to reach €150 million.
For a league that does not generate the financial power of Europe’s top divisions, Galatasaray had to stretch their resources significantly to secure the Nigerian forward.
Galatasaray’s Struggles Highlight the Financial Pressure
Galatasaray have endured a difficult spell, losing three of their last six matches in all competitions. One of those defeats came in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against AS Monaco at Stade Louis II.
Their slump has coincided with a wave of injuries.
Key players including Wilfried Singo, Mario Lemina, and Kaan Ayhan are currently sidelined, forcing Buruk to turn to academy players to fill gaps in the squad.
When questioned after the Monaco loss about potential reinforcements, Buruk admitted that the club’s finances are severely restricted, largely due to the Osimhen deal.
“There are no defenders left on the reserve bench. If someone got injured, there would be no solution,” Buruk said, via Sport News.
“We are going through a difficult period and have not had the desired output from some players.
There are salary budget limits from both the TFF and UEFA. We bought Osimhen for €75 million, and his salary is also a huge burden.
We brought in important players like Sané, İlkay and Singo, but no one could have predicted this scenario.”
He added that the club will reassess their approach in the January window, especially if they continue in the Champions League.
Osimhen Still Trusted, Despite Injury Challenges
Despite the financial weight of the transfer, Osimhen has performed well when fit. However, a series of injuries has disrupted his rhythm and reduced his availability this season.
Galatasaray remain confident in their marquee signing, and Osimhen will be keen to regain full fitness and deliver consistent goals as the season progresses.
