Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has opened up on his main goal for the 2025/2026 season with Werder Bremen, following a challenging start to life at the club.
The 24-year-old joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the last transfer window but has struggled to make a strong impact so far, recording two assists in eight appearances without finding the back of the net.
Boniface addresses goal drought
Despite coming on as a substitute in Werder Bremen’s recent win over VfL Wolfsburg, Boniface’s lack of goals has continued to draw attention. However, the Nigerian striker insists that personal numbers are not his primary concern at the moment.
‘Football is like life — sometimes you have good moments, sometimes bad ones,” Boniface told SABC Sports.
‘For me, it’s about finding the right balance. It’s not just about scoring; it’s about the team’s overall performance. I don’t want to score and still lose games. Winning together as a team is what matters most, and once that happens, the goals will follow.’

Staying fit and consistent
Boniface, who has previously battled two cruciate ligament injuries, says his main ambition this season is to remain healthy and contribute consistently.
‘My personal goal is to play the entire season without injury,’ he said.
‘When I signed for Werder, I told the media that I don’t set big personal targets. I just want to help the team, stay fit, and enjoy my football. If I can do that and we achieve something meaningful as a group, I’ll be happy.’
Mental strength and resilience
Beyond his on-field struggles, Boniface has also faced difficult periods in his life. Having grown up with his grandparents in Nigeria and played across countries like Norway and Cyprus, the 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the Year says those experiences shaped his mindset.
‘Growing up with my grandparents in Africa wasn’t easy, but it made me tough,” he reflected.
’ve travelled to places I never imagined, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. The media will always talk — some of it true, some not — but I don’t let that bother me. My focus is on improving myself.’
‘My mentality is strong. I don’t get distracted by outside opinions; I stay focused on my game,’ he added confidently.
Despite his recent performances, Boniface was not included in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs against Gabon.
