The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and United States–affiliated schools in the country.
In a notice published on Monday, the embassy advised American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to exercise heightened caution when travelling to U.S. diplomatic locations and institutions connected to the United States.
According to the advisory, U.S. nationals should remain vigilant when visiting the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the United States.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement said.
The embassy urged Americans to adopt additional safety precautions while moving around such locations. These measures include varying travel times and routes, avoiding predictable routines, and maintaining heightened awareness in public areas.
It also advised individuals to review their personal security plans, keep a low profile, and ensure their mobile phones remain charged in case of emergencies.
“Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, review your personal security plans, vary your regular routes, keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency, stay alert in public places, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings,” the notice added.
While the embassy did not specify the exact source or nature of the threat, the warning comes amid heightened global tensions following recent military confrontations involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The alert also follows demonstrations in parts of Lagos and several northern states where members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria protested the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Reports also indicated that Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the wife of the Iranian leader, died from injuries sustained during attacks on her residence in Tehran.
The security notice comes at a time of growing international concern over the potential for retaliatory actions linked to the escalating Middle East conflict.
Authorities have not announced any specific incidents in Nigeria related to the warning, but the embassy emphasized the importance of caution and preparedness for American citizens in the country.
