Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have joined calls for the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made their appeal two days after colleagues Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo and Peter Abbey publicly advocated restraint. The four legislators are urging the House to consider dialogue and reconciliation rather than pursuing immediate impeachment.
The calls for caution come amid an escalating standoff between the state’s legislative and executive arms. Speaking during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Minority Leader Nwankwo, who represents Omuma State Constituency, said they had received numerous appeals from leaders both within and outside Rivers State, encouraging leniency and a measured approach to the dispute. He emphasized that peaceful solutions should be prioritized over politically charged actions.
Abbey, representing Degema State Constituency, acknowledged that the governor may have breached constitutional provisions but stressed that mistakes can happen. He urged colleagues to focus on ensuring such issues are corrected and prevented in the future rather than pursuing immediate punitive action.
The lawmakers suggested that alternatives to impeachment, including dialogue and negotiation, could help restore harmony between the legislative and executive branches. Their joint position highlights a growing sentiment within the House to seek resolution through understanding, reflection, and measured responses rather than confrontation.
The development adds to ongoing debates within the Assembly, as lawmakers weigh the implications of impeachment against the potential for political reconciliation in Rivers State.
