The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern condemnation of the Nigeria Police Force following the unsealing of the party’s National Secretariat, popularly known as Wadata Plaza, in Abuja. In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the factional National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, described the police action as a “brazen act of partisan interference” and a direct affront to the rule of law. The faction maintains that the unsealing of the headquarters was carried out in defiance of a pending legal dispute and an active appeal filed at the Court of Appeal, which seeks to set aside a lower court judgment that favored a rival faction.

The crisis within the main opposition party took a dramatic turn after officers of the Nigeria Police Force, purportedly acting on a court order issued by Justice Abdulmalik, removed the security cordons that had been in place for several months. The Turaki faction, which enjoys the support of prominent governors including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, argued that the police should have maintained the status quo until the appellate court delivered its final verdict. They alleged that the unsealing was a “premeditated move” to hand over the administrative machinery of the party to individuals they described as agents of the federal government and loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Comrade Ini Ememobong asserted that by facilitating the takeover of the secretariat by a rival group led by Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, the police have “tampered with the res”—the subject matter of the litigation. The faction argued that this action risks rendering any future judgment of the Court of Appeal a mere academic exercise. The statement further called on the Inspector General of Police and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the unsealing, suggesting that the neutrality of the security agency had been compromised. They urged party members across the country to remain calm but resolute, insisting that the “legitimate leadership” of the party would not be intimidated by what they termed as “political maneuvers.”

Legal experts and political analysts have expressed concern over the “judicialization” of party politics in Nigeria, noting that the constant reliance on court orders to manage internal party affairs has weakened the democratic fabric of the opposition. Analysts suggest that the reopening of Wadata Plaza under the current circumstances will likely lead to more friction and potentially more litigation, further distracting the party from its role as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). They observe that the “Wike factor” continues to loom large over the PDP, creating a stalemate that benefits the ruling party as the 2027 general elections approach.

The broader implications of this development point toward a potential “terminal decline” of internal cohesion within the PDP if a political solution is not reached. With the secretariat now in the hands of the Wike-backed faction, the struggle for the party’s structure and the control of its primary election processes is expected to intensify. Experts maintain that the inability of the party to resolve its differences internally has made it vulnerable to external manipulation, thereby diminishing its chances of mounting a unified front in future electoral contests. As the legal battle shifts fully to the higher courts, the fate of Wadata Plaza remains a symbol of the deep-seated divisions that threaten the future of Nigeria’s largest opposition platform.
