A tragic road accident at the Badagry Roundabout in Lagos has claimed the lives of a traffic official and two commercial motorcyclists after a truck conveying cement reportedly lost control and rammed into them.
The incident occurred on Monday at about 9:00 a.m., eyewitnesses said. According to residents and commuters, the heavy-duty truck approached the junction at high speed before veering off its lane, triggering panic and chaos at the busy intersection.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said the affected officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority was on duty directing traffic when the truck suddenly swerved and struck him. The officer reportedly died on the spot. Two commercial motorcyclists who were waiting for passengers near the junction were also hit and killed instantly.
A police source confirmed that the crash caused severe traffic congestion in the area, necessitating the immediate deployment of additional personnel to manage the situation. Officials from LASTMA, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road Safety Corps were mobilised to restore order and ease vehicular movement.
The source added that the truck driver was arrested at the scene and taken into custody, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to a hospital mortuary. The vehicle involved was also impounded for further investigation.
Confirming the incident, the Badagry Unit Commander of the FRSC, Yusuf Sanni, attributed the crash to loss of control by the driver. He disclosed that the suspect had been handed over to the police and advised motorists to avoid the area due to traffic disruption.
The Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, CSP Folajimi Agosile, also confirmed the arrest, stating that the driver would be prosecuted after investigations.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain a reaction from the LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, were unsuccessful, though he reportedly indicated that an official statement would be released.
