Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have apprehended two herders accused of trespassing on community farmlands and destroying crops during a routine harvest-season patrol in Makurdi, Benue State. The incident took place on November 20, 2025, when troops stationed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated fields belonging to local residents.
Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, spokesperson for the operation, said the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to protect farmers and ensure food security during the harvest season. He added that the swift action prevented further damage and potential clashes between the herders and farmers. The suspects are now in custody pending further investigations and legal proceedings.
The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their professionalism and advised residents against taking the law into their own hands. He emphasised that retaliatory actions could escalate tensions and disrupt peaceful coexistence. Gara also warned herders to obey the law and refrain from acts that threaten security and public order, reaffirming the operation’s commitment to safeguarding farmlands and supporting lawful economic activities.
This development follows the recent arrest of a suspected notorious kidnapper, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, by troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, in Southern Taraba on November 23, 2025. Bawa is believed to be connected to Umar Musa, another suspected kidnapper apprehended a day earlier. Preliminary investigations suggest both men are members of a larger criminal syndicate responsible for kidnappings, violent attacks and other organised crimes in the region.
The arrests demonstrate the continued efforts of security agencies to protect communities and maintain law and order across the affected states.
