Motorists and commuters traveling along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway have been urged to seek alternative routes following a major traffic disruption caused by an overturned truck at Otedola Bridge on Wednesday morning.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m., has led to severe gridlock along the busy corridor, particularly for vehicles heading inward Lagos. According to officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident involved a truck transporting two 20-foot containers.
Preliminary reports indicate that the truck lost balance while moving along the bridge, causing it to overturn and spill across a significant portion of the road. The fallen vehicle reportedly blocked nearly 90 percent of the roadway, leaving only a single lane accessible for motorists attempting to pass through the area.
As a result, traffic built up rapidly, stretching across several kilometres and affecting commuters heading toward key areas of Lagos during the morning rush hour. Drivers have been experiencing long delays, with many stranded in slow-moving traffic while emergency response teams work to manage the situation.
Officials from LASTMA were immediately deployed to the scene to control traffic flow and assist motorists navigating the congested route. Their presence has helped direct vehicles through the remaining open lane while also guiding drivers toward alternative routes in order to reduce pressure on the affected section of the expressway.
In addition, a recovery vehicle has been dispatched to remove the overturned truck and its containers from the bridge. Authorities say clearing the obstruction is a top priority, as the blockage continues to pose a major challenge for traffic movement along the busy expressway.
LASTMA officials have appealed to road users to remain calm, exercise patience, and cooperate with traffic personnel working at the scene. Motorists are also advised to consider other routes where possible until the damaged truck is successfully evacuated and normal traffic flow is restored.
Efforts are ongoing to clear the obstruction and fully reopen the road to commuters. Authorities say further updates will be provided as recovery operations progress and the situation improves.
