President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to establishing state police as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria, declaring that the promises he made before assuming office in 2023 would be fulfilled.
The President made the pledge on Tuesday night while hosting state governors to an interfaith breaking of the fast at the Presidential Villa. The gathering brought together Muslim and Christian leaders and governors to observe Ramadan and Lent, underscoring themes of unity, compassion, and shared national responsibility.
Addressing the governors, Tinubu urged them to intensify efforts at the grassroots, stressing that development must transcend religious, ethnic, and social divides. He commended state leaders for their outreach initiatives during the holy season but challenged them to do more to reach vulnerable communities.
According to the President, governance must remain people-centred, particularly for citizens who feel neglected. He emphasized that compassion should not recognise tribe, opportunity should not recognise status, and development should not recognise religion.
On security, Tinubu described it as the foundation of national prosperity, noting that without safety, agriculture, commerce, and family life cannot thrive. He assured Nigerians that security reforms would not be delayed, adding that decisive action was necessary to address persistent threats across the country.
“We will establish state police to curb insecurity,” the President said, explaining that the move was driven by practicality rather than politics. He noted that empowering states with policing capabilities would enhance local security while strengthening the national security framework.
Tinubu also called for courage and unity in reforming systems that are no longer effective, insisting that collective resolve was required to protect the nation’s future.
“Nigeria will be safer. Nigeria will be stronger,” he said, adding that sustained collaboration between the federal and state governments would deliver renewed hope and stability to citizens nationwide.
